The 7-Second Rule
Always do the manual check
Place the back of your hand flat on the pavement. If you can't comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds — it's too hot for your dog to walk on.
Ground temp estimates are a guide. The hand test is always the final word. 🐾
🧤
Cold Weather Paw Guide
Keep paws safe in cold conditions
🧊 The Cold Hand Test: Press the back of your hand to the pavement — if it feels uncomfortably cold within 7 seconds, it's too cold for bare paws.
🧂 Salt & Ice Melt: Road salts and chemical de-icers can burn and irritate paw pads. Always rinse paws after winter walks.
🐾 Paw Balm: Apply a protective balm before walks to create a barrier against ice, salt and frost.
👟 Dog Boots: In Extreme Cold or icy conditions, boots are the safest option — they also protect against salt ingestion from licking paws.
⏱️ Keep It Short: In Extreme Cold, limit walks to 5–10 minutes max and watch for limping or paw lifting — signs your dog is too cold.

Asphalt heats fast — and holds it
On a sunny 77°F day, asphalt can reach 125°F. Damage to paw pads can happen in under 60 seconds. Shaded paths and grass are always cooler alternatives.
🧊
Cold hurts paws too
Ice, snow, and especially road salt can crack and burn paws just like heat. Rinse your dog's paws after every winter walk — even if it doesn't look icy.
💧
Hydration matters more than you think
Dogs cool themselves by panting — not sweating. Offer water every 15–20 minutes on hot days. Small dogs and flat-faced breeds (pugs, bulldogs) overheat faster.
⏰
Timing is everything in summer
Walk before 8am or after 7pm during summer months. Pavement holds heat for hours after the sun goes down — dusk doesn't mean cool.
🚨
Know the signs of heat exhaustion
Excessive panting, drooling, red gums, wobbling, or refusing to walk are all red flags. Stop immediately, move to shade, offer water, and wet their paws and belly. If symptoms persist, call a vet.
🐕
Not all dogs feel heat the same way
Flat-faced breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies) — overheat fastest. Even mild heat is dangerous. Keep walks short and early.
Arctic breeds (Huskies, Malamutes) — struggle badly in heat, handle cold well. Avoid full sun above 70°F.
Small dogs — closer to the ground means more heat exposure. What feels fine to you can be intense for them.
Senior dogs & puppies — poor temperature regulation. Treat them like a flat-faced breed regardless of their actual breed.
Dark-coated dogs — absorb more solar heat. Add 10–15°F to how hot you think they feel on sunny days.
